ASSOCHAM Indirect Tax Council has always worked closely with the Finance Ministry & played a proactive role in the development of India’s tax and trade policies. It works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the growth of industry in India, partnering industry and government alike through advisory and consultative processes & to bridge the gaps that exists between policymaking, policy interpretation, and policy application. The Council interacts regularly with key government officials from Ministry of Finance (including Revenue Secretary & CBIC Chairman & its team) and disseminates information through publications, conferences, seminars. It created awareness about the various initiatives of the Finance Ministry by organizing programs on regular intervals on the issues related to indirect taxes and the recommendations received during the programs were well acclaimed by the Finance Ministry.

ASSOCHAM played a very significant role in creating awareness about the VAT in the country by holding 25 conferences in various parts of the country and bringing out four specialized papers. On GST, ASSOCHAM conducted more than 150 sessions across the country including 75 training and awareness sessions before its implementation to enable the trade and industry about the various provisions of the law.
